A brief blog about father’s day. A little late I know to write about FD but better late etc. An interesting contrast between my two children in their approach to wishing their elderly? father well. (The last blog I wrote about ‘elderly parents’ was about my mother). When you’re retired, assuming you had them in the first place, you still have them, children that is, when you are retired. Does the dynamic change as you get older? I’d say in my experience probably, yes. Maybe they appreciate us a little more, or maybe they realise they won’t have to put up with us much longer so might as well be nice to us. First, number one son :
I hope you look at these photos (on the front of the Moonpig card) and take a second and realise without you none of it would have been possible!! We are happy, health, crazy bastards! And you’ve given us all a great life! You should be proud and of course mum but this isn’t about her ha ha. Thank you for making the life I have possible and for the majority of the man I’ve turned out to be ha ha, the bald and stress head you could have kept.
Quite touching, and surprising, maybe he’s softening me up for another ‘loan’. Cynical moi? Then there was the daughter’s efforts, a somewhat different strategy:
Happpppy father’s day!!!! Thank you for being a moderately acceptable father and supporting me throughout the majority of my life tribulations.*
I replied, ‘majority you mean there were more I didn’t know about?’
So what am I to make of these efforts? That’s the thing about being retired you have so much more time to contemplate the meaning of life as reflected in these Father’s Day cards / texts. But then now is probably not the time for such considerations. I did say this would be brief and I will keep to that. Any deeper thinking might be a bit too painful for this retirement blog.
