Is there any reason why every day shouldn’t be Christmas day for the retired person? I only ask because I’m reflecting briefly on our Christmas day. I suppose the answer to the question depends in part on what kind of Christmas day you typically have.
Certainly this one just gone was fairly simple. I mused upon it as I sat in our living room on Christmas morning. I was reading one of my new books (the one above), listening to the new John Coltraine CD, drinking a cup of Irish coffee and eating a fancy chocolate biscuit. I wasn’t wearing my new jumper but that would come later. The dogs were lying at my feet not making any demands.
So I thought you know this is about all it takes for me to enjoy Christmas, oh and no visitors. So just able to please ourselves. It’s not much to ask. But then that raised the question. If it’s not much to ask, should every day be Christmas day if you’re retired? If it doesn’t take much to make me ‘happy’ then why shouldn’t every day be the same?
If your view of retirement is that it is a licence to have fun, then yes, every day should be Christmas day. But I think I’ve made it clear in these blogs that I don’t believe my retirement should be so indulgent. The other problem would be that a person would get bored wouldn’t they with that constant level of pleasure.
But then tell that to those retirees who spend each and every day on some Spanish (or similar) beach soaking up the rays, drinking their sangria and reading their paperback. No doubt thinking thoughts along the lines – well, I worked hard all my life and now I deserve it.
Sadly, maybe, it doesn’t work for me like that. So while I’m continuing to muse on the perversity of that, I’ll share some of my presents with you. Books of course. As I’ve written I try to request or buy books that I wouldn’t buy otherwise. So here they are.
Anyway I hope you’ve had a decent Christmas and you’re lining up for an excellent retirement (if you are) new year.

Merry Christmas… may every day be your Christmas day!
