Can it be writer’s block?

Posted on April 14, 2026April 14, 2026

This is the first blog on this my new laptop. I’m not really sure why I bought another one, this one makes four and since my little literary hiccup – more of which in a moment – I couldn’t honestly say I needed another one but it happened while Mrs Summerhouse and I were buying a fridge in Currys ((which we definitely did need) and I mentioned to her I was thinking of buying a new laptop.  She did not say, you don’t need another laptop as I had anticipated but instead she blatantly encouraged me to go ahead. So I did. I don’t like the last one I bought a couple of years ago and., at first use, I don’t much like this one either.

I had intended the topic of this blog to be writer’s block and more specifically whether it was possible for a blog writer, that’s me, to get writer’s block. I’m not sure whether that’s what I’ve suffered from these last few weeks  (you hadn’t noticed? ) but something hasn’t been right. If I thought a new machine might somehow unblock me, so far I have to say I was in error, on admittedly brief acquaintance it’s making matters worse.

In fact right now I am seriously considering giving up writing this retirement  blog altogether. It’s probably been about six weeks since the last one and I can’t say I’ve missed it in fact It’s been something of a relief not to have top think of a new topic  every two weeks (my usual schedule). And I have been writing it for about 13 years so I’ve got to stop sometime before senility or even death come along and bring it to a halt, not to mention not being able to hit the right keys, breaking my glasses hasn’t helped either.

I lost enthusiasm for writing after the last blog about my disenchantment with America. That lasted exactly one day,. the very next day I turned to my Tuesday night TV choice it being the night Mrs Summerhouse teaches her yoga class so I am left to my own devices and my choice of viewing. This has been a DVD on the history of jazz by Ken Burns. There’s no music I enjoy more than jazz and no music more American than jazz. So I thought trying to detach myself from all things American isn’t going to work. I will return to this tricky topic at a later stage should I continue to write this retirement blog.

I’m going to leave this one right now. I know it’s short and it’s a blog about not writing a blog, which is a bit of a cheat but it’s the best I can do. Apologies for the misleading image, there are no tips for over-coming writer’s block in this blog certainly not buying a new laptop.

Even when your blog entries are short and you claim don’t offer much I still fine them quite amusing. Certainly can’t blame you or anyone for experiencing “American troubles.” Don’t give up the blog quite yet…just look for a new angle perhaps?
