I came across these three Banana Republic* catalogues (as above) while looking for something else entirely. They’re from 1985, 87, 88 and I’ve kept them all these years. When I first came across this form of marketing I loved it. I loved the drawn images rather than the traditional photos. Mind you, at that time, I loved everything about America. It was my dream country. Not so much now and that goes for my own country.
But back to happier times or does previous life always seem that way? I decided they would make a lighter Friday retirement blog than the blogs I’ve been posting recently which have been a little down-beat to say the least.
So a few photos from these catalogues – the three covers and a picture of a jacket from way back then. I coveted it and then bought it and what do you know, like the catalogues themselves I still have it and here’s a photo to prove it. Just to make absolutely certain Mrs Summerhouse has taken a photo of me in it with the recently-purchased hat. What more proof do you need?
So she took that and then the dogs insisted on being in it so we included that as well. And when I looked at the first photo of just me I decided to ban it and just keep the one with the dogs. I can do that it’s my blog.
Finally, the last picture is a bit bizarre. It’s an image from one of the catalogues of the man I wanted to be or at least what I wanted to look like all those 30 or so years ago. Make of that what you will.
*Whether Banana Republic still exists I cannot say but I know from past visits to the USA it’s no longer the shopping experience it was in those halcyon days. Or were they really that good?
