Even though I’ve been retired for just over 12 years (September 2013) and have written, according to my recent advert in The Oldie magazine (I put one in each year about this time) I have written over 2,000 blogs about retirement ( see image above)I have, in that time, read very few other people’s retirement blogs. And that is still fundamentally true but I did recently come close. Last week up popped, unbidden, on my Facebook page, what I assumed to be an advert for a blog written by a retired person.
It was entitled ‘What’s wrong with me now?’ I say assumed because although I saved it to read at some future point, I lost it so I can’t give further credit to the writer or any elaboration on the actual content. I really liked the title. It was one of those ‘I wish I’d thought of that’ moments and so the best I can do is make reference to it here and now and maybe you can do a better job than I have at seeking it out. From what I could gather he was off to the doctor’s again. All I can say is, lucky man, getting to see my doctor if I even have one, involves a minimum three week wait after trying to get a slot on line. But enough of the negative
Back to the positive, I liked the title because it seems to be the humorous wonderings of somebody who has too many health problems to deal with and that dear reader is undoubtedly me at this stage of my own retirement. Briefly, for me, diabetes, injured shoulder, possible sciatica, pains in foot in the night, poor balance, occasional dizzy spells, general tiredness. Well you get the idea.
So returning to the admired but unknown, other person’s blog title, I like it, a lot, because it seems to suggest that the writer is treating his own health problems with humour and that is a rare piece of advice from me about how to deal with many health problems if you possibly can. Easier said than done I know but do your best.
The other subsidiary positive I took from ‘the title’ was the realisation that I was not alone in my trials and tribulations. As my grandma used to say, misery loves company. And of course I’ve always known that other people have health issues, some people obviously with far worse problems than me. I suppose, given a choice between one, this will kill you, big problem and a whole host of ‘relatively minor’ ones most of us would go for the several minor ones version.
Anyway that’s where I’m at with my health right now. I’m collecting conditions along the lines of, I wonder what new experience today will bring? Let’s see how many more ‘conditions’ I can accumulate before I shuffle off this mortal coil. I know that for most people will not be a cheerful / positive thought but hey, you do what you have to.
